Complementary Components of HealthCare Seminar
Series
Module A
Advances in Vitamin/Mineral Technology
Now, more than ever before, health care professionals
are being asked questions about nutritional supplements
by individuals desiring to maintain health or overcome
health challenges. While vitamin/mineral supplements
in the past were often considered an expensive and unnecessary
luxury, it is now well documented that for multiple
reasons, most people do not consume an optimal amount
of these nutrients by diet alone. It now appears prudent
for everyone to take vitamin/mineral supplements for
optimal health. Since the 1940’s, continuing research
has led to the development of second and now third generation
vitamin/mineral supplements. As the technology has advanced,
better understanding of solubility, absorption and bioavailability
has evolved to help maximize the efficacy of these supplements.
Not only does this course cover the basics of the various
vitamins and minerals and their positive and potential
negative effects on the body, but also outlines the
important differences in the three generations of vitamin
and mineral supplements available - including the more
recent inclusion of protective plant phytochemicals
to the formulas. With almost 5000 thousand nutritional
companies to choose from, an important added section
to this course will provide information on how to more
readily discern nutritional fact from aggressive and
sometimes misleading marketing practices when it comes
to recommending a specific vitamin and mineral supplement
to our patients.
Module B
Introduction to Glyconutritional Technology
The speaker will explain what glyconutrients are and
describe their major fates in the human body. Apart
from the fact that they can be used to provide energy,
one major fate is to be built into the sugar chains
of glycoconjugates (glycoproteins, glycolipids &
proteoglycans). Emphasis will focus on the sugar chains
of glycoproteins. As will be shown, these molecules
have many important functions in the human body, involved
in maintaining wellness, and are also involved in a
variety of major diseases. Consideration of the structures
and functions of sugar chains leads to an introduction
to what is meant by the terms Glycobiology and Glycomics,
and also of their overall significance. Active research
is underway on how some of the actions of glyconutrients
may be mediated by the gastrointestinal system, which
contains 70 % of the human immune system. The session
will conclude by indicating that there are a relatively
large number of mechanisms by which glyconutrients may
sustain human wellness.
Module C
Antioxidants: Anti-Aging and Disease Prevention
“Antioxidants” has become a buzzword, a
controversial topic lately. The media quotes one medical
journal saying that antioxidants are essential; the
next saying they are unnecessary; while the next says
they will sicken or kill you! This module examines biologic
oxidation and the fundamental science of antioxidants,
providing a basic understanding of their roles in health,
aging and disease. Combined with a look at advances
in technology and research, participants will gain an
understanding of the importance of antioxidants and
their potential for prevention, diagnosis, intervention
and nutritional therapy. Most importantly, an understanding
of the science will dispel the confusion and fear created
by the media.
Module D
Glyconutritionals: Advances in Clinical Applications
“… nowadays, hardly a month goes by without
researchers finding new links between disease and
sugar biology … all of this has profoundly changed
scientists’ views of sugars and their place
in the scheme of things. ‘People now realize
that we can’t manage without them.” says
New Scientist Magazine. This module examines glycomics
in the mainstream, how pharmaceutical, biotech and
nutraceutical companies are making use of this technology
and presents highlights of glycomics in scientific
literature. Examining glycosylation-defect deficiencies
and how they relate to autoimmune, chronic degenerative
and genetic disorders, participants will understand
the significance of glyconutrients in health and the
case for supplementation.
Module E
Glycemic Indexing – Level 1
Science, studies in nutrition and genomics are showing
us that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes
to diets or weight management. These same studies
are also showing the importance of weight management
to health! This module reviews the consequences of
popular dieting methods, emphasizing the impact of
metabolic outcomes. The glycemic index is examined
as a tool for weight management and for its potential
importance in the treatment of chronic disease. Participants
will understand weight management as essential to
health and explore how glycemic indexing can impact
your fat-loss and health: optimal nutrition as your
choice today will change your future health.
Module F
Advanced GI: The Genetic Key Diet Trainers Course
One only has to look in the mirror or around
at others to recognize that a significant percentage
of the population is overweight or obese. That fact
provides a dual opportunity from this course. Overweight
or not – you will still learn valuable information
that will help you achieve or maintain a healthy and
optimal goal weight for yourself. As a Weight Management
Advisor, you will have the most effective weight loss
/ management program available today to use with your
clients. This is the last diet you or your clients
will ever need!
