Redefining
Wellness in the Regulatory Environment
Direct marketing and retailing of nutritional products
has resulted in a large industry that is now being strictly
regulated by the “structure/function” claims
rules of the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal
Trade Commission. Switching information from the old sickness
model to the new Wellness model is not only legally mandated,
it also makes for good common sense and a more accurate
message when we share nutrition information with health
care professionals and others. |
| |
Learning objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should
be better able to: |
- Review of DSHEA, FDA, FTC, freedom of speech, commercial
speech and current enforcement throughout the industry.
- Identify common fallacies in the old approach vs
the wellness paradigm.
- Review Basic Nutrition and integrative health care
approaches that allow us to effectively (and legally)
share information with others.

The Basics of Glyconutritionals
Optimal Wellness involves the body’s innate ability
to maintain, repair, regulate and protect itself as well
as to build new cells by utilizing daily vital nutrients.
A comparatively recent, but significant development in
the field of Glycobiology has been the introduction of
glyconutrients as nutritional supplements for health support
and their potential to help improve quality of life. This
course reviews the basics of the science of glyconutrients
and their wide-ranging involvement in the manufacture,
structure and function of glycoconjugates necessary to
optimize wellness. Additional reviews of the science will
expand into the areas of prebiotic function, antioxidant
activity and other aspects of the broad spectrum potential
benefits glyconutrient supplements can play. |
| |
Learning Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should
be better able to: |
- Describe the emerging science of glycomics / glycobiology
and the basic underlying biochemical pathways involved
in glyconutrients.
- Examine individual glyconutrients and their important
roles in supporting and maintaining various aspects
of normal human biochemistry, physiology and organ
system functions.
- Review common sources and their potentials for nutritionally
effective amounts of glyconutrient supplements.

Advanced Glyconutrient Wellness
Technology
Supporting normal physiological processes is crucial regardless
of whether one is striving to maintain or regain wellness
and optimal quality of life. Understanding the principles
of how glyconutrients are used by the body to help support
those processes is a key component to utilizing more integrative
approaches to health. Whether we are looking at the immune
system, cognitive function or a myriad of other bodily
functions, glyconutrients are major nutritional players.
Measuring appropriate Biomarkers of Wellness can help
us evaluate an individual’s progress.
|
Learning Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should
be better able to: |
- Differentiate between traditional standard of care
treatment and support of normal physiological functions
as it pertains to integrative health care and the
FDA and FTC regulatory environment.
- Define major principles of glyconutrient utilization
by the body to maintain or facilitate normal physiological
processes.
- Review biomarkers of wellness and their application
to help evaluate the body’s utilization of nutritional
support.
